Fight For Climate Change

Here is a copy of the letter we will send to your lawmakers:

As your constituent, I am writing today to urge you to stand against the latest reconciliation bill – a bill that does not go nearly far enough in the fight for climate change legislation. The current reconciliation package under consideration fails to address climate change, one of the most urgent and worrying issues facing us today, and your vote in favor would be a devastating blow to the fight for climate action.

As a progressive member of the House of Representatives, you have made your support for meaningful, substantial climate change legislation clear. I urge you to vote against this irresponsible, reckless bill that ignores the most pressing concern facing our planet and our futures.

Anything less than a comprehensive plan to protect the climate at this point is not enough – because climate change remains the biggest threat to our planet’s survival. Here are some of the facts:

  1. 97% of climate scientists agree that humans are causing global warming and climate change – According to NASA, scientists “have high confidence that global temperatures will continue to rise for many decades, mainly due to greenhouse gases produced by human activities.”

  2. Human-caused climate change has already doubled the area of forest burned in recent decades; as we experience more wildfires caused by climate change, tens of millions of people in the United States will face additional health hazards, while the costs of fighting wildfires – which have risen 11-fold over the last three decades – add a financial crisis to the already-existing public health risk.
  3. As the planet warms and sea levels rise, sea ice in the Arctic is expected to decrease, with the Arctic Ocean becoming ice-free in late summer by the mid-century, which will lead to the loss of habitats for millions of animals and destroyed ecosystems in the Arctic.

I urge you to oppose this lukewarm reconciliation bill, which prioritizes profit now over saving the lives of all future generations. We only have one planet – and we must do all we can to protect it. Hold to your promise to your constituents to protect the environment and our planet by voting against this bill and continue to stand with us in the fight for substantial climate change legislation.
