What is your political party? Do you even know? There are quizzes on the internet that tell you if you are more Republican or more Democratic. But I do not know if you can decide based on a quiz. It is a lot more complicated than that. I know many people that have beliefs on one side and yet tend to align with the opposite side. It is okay to not be 100% on one side or the other. So without getting too political, should be easy enough, let’s try to explain these parties a little more in depth.

Democratic Party

Democratic Party

According to this site the Democratic Party was founded in 1828. Other common names when referring to this party are liberals or progressives. Another way to describe this party is being left wing. The symbol of this party is a Donkey. What does this party believe or stand for? Democrats generally believe in a larger government and higher taxes for the wealthy. If you visit the Democratic National Committee Homepage you’ll find their statement, “We’re fighting on behalf of the notion that anyone, from any walk of life, should have a fair shot at the American Dream.” Their values include: limiting the wealth gap, lowering health costs, sensible immigration reform, supporting veterans and military families, fixing the justice system to eliminate racism, guaranteeing rights for minorities—people with disabilities, LGBTQ community—advancing women’s rights, advancing clean energy and climate change, gun reforms, investing in education, and progressing liberty and equality for all.

Republican Party

Republican Party.

The same site listed above mentions that the Republican Party was founded in 1854. Another name for members of this party are conservatives. And they are typically found to be right wing. And their party symbol is an elephant. Republicans generally believe in smaller government and lower taxes. If you visit the Republican Party Platform Homepage you’ll find their statement, “We believe in America.” A list of their values include: America is exceptional, the Constitution should be honored and upheld, leaders should serve their people and not their own agenda, families and communities should be strong and free from government interference, the foundation of society is based on the traditional institution of marriage, government should be smaller but more efficient, health care decisions should be our own with the help of our doctors, there should be a strong military, life should be protected, support of building up schools, veterans should have the best care, social programs should help rise people out of poverty, and America should be energy independent.

Two Party Government

Although there are more than two parties in the U.S. political system, it is often considered a two-party system because the two main political parties run much of the government. They are the most popular parties and, therefore, the most powerful. The other parties include the Constitution Party, Libertarian Party, and the Green Party.

This is a very simplistic explanation and just to get you started. But when deciding something like this doing your own research is very important. We are a great country and all our differences make us better.
