Do not ban Kratom in Iowa City
I am writing to express my strong opposition to recent considerations from the Iowa City Council calling for a local ban on kratom. History has shown bans on substances like kratom do not work. Bans result in a prolific black market with untested and unsafe products.
Instead, I support the regulation of kratom. Kratom, a plant native to Southeast Asia, has been used for centuries for its natural benefits, such as mood enhancement and relaxation.
As a resident of Iowa City, I want to ensure access to safe, high-quality kratom products. Regulations will accomplish that aim and ensure kratom consumers do not lose access to this plant that has, in many cases, pulled them away from the grip of opioid addiction.
Common-sense regulations would include accurately labeled products, limitations against manipulating ingredients and potency of products, restrictions on products that appeal to minors, and ensuring minors cannot purchase kratom. Regulations would also include the institution of a local tax on kratom products, as well as fines for non-compliance.
I urge you to support regulations of kratom and advocate for swift implementation in place of a ban. By prioritizing consumer safety and well-being, Iowa City residents can access quality kratom products while minimizing the potential risks associated with unregulated producers.
