Tell Congress: Keep Toxic Chemicals Out of Our Food
Dear Senator Klobuchar,
We urge you to co-sponsor the Ensuring Safe and Toxic-Free Foods Act to protect public health and restore trust in our food system. As a Minnesotan, I’m writing with concerns about FDA’s failure to address the toxic additives in our food and their current Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS) rule.
GRAS is misused by companies— leading to more than 1,000 food chemicals on our grocery store shelves that have never been checked for safety by FDA. We don’t know whether these substances are linked to cancer, reproductive harm and chronic disease. Congress must close this gap and create a transparent process for food chemical safety decisions.
The FDA needs tools and authority to get key information to accurately prioritize health risks, act on evidence of harm and limit the use of toxic substances in food products. Please champion this legislation to ensure our food is truly safe for all.
